Species Symphodus ocellatus

Elongated fish with a greenish to brown coloration, with a single dorsal fin. Shows an ocelle-like shape on the operculum, and presents a dark spot in the middle of the caudal peduncle.

Possible confusion with Symphodus mediterraneus, but this species does not present the ocelle on the operculum, and has a stain at the base of the pectoral fin.

Females may be confused with other young wrasse females, such as S. roissali, S. cinereus or S. tinca, but the ocelle of S. ocellatus is key for its successful identification.
