The cryptics page is where you will find those taxa that cannot be identified to the species level (or less precisely) based only on photographic evidence. Many species can only be identified by genetic analysis or after inspecting some internal anatomical characteristic. As we don’t want these photos to appear on the unidentified taxa page where you can help to refine the identification, our moderators have marked the images as cryptics and they can be seen here. In some cases you might see cryptic species identified and verified to species level, which is often the case with scientific material that has been photographed and later analysed to ascertain its species.
